When History Rears Its Head in the Present

Reading Jackson Richman’s article on being a descendant of Holocaust survivors (“To the ‘Alt-Right’: A Message From the Grandson of Holocaust Survivors,” August 24, 2017) was both enlightening and a reminder.

Growing up, I often heard the stories of a dear family friend’s experiences during World War II; now I, wish I had paid more attention. He was a colonel, and among the first of the Allies to enter Buchenwald. He spoke of the horrors he observed. He also spoke of the surprise and shock of nearby communities when they were made to tour the site. They had no idea such a thing existed, since the propaganda machine strongly denied the existence.

It is sad so many refuse to learn from history.
