On June 25, the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of Greater Washington sponsored a luncheon with Rabbi Michael Melchior, former Israeli Minister of Social and Diaspora Affairs, on “Jewish Unity At A Crossroads: A Briefing on the Current State of Israel-Diaspora Relations.” Speaking to a capacity crowd, Rabbi Melchior shared his perspectives on current challenges in the relationship between American and Israeli Jews, both with respect to religious pluralism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In particular, he discussed Meitarim, the pluralistic, inclusive Jewish education network he founded. Meitarim brings together Jewish students across the religious spectrum from preschool through high school and beyond, and currently includes over 60 institutions throughout the country. He also discussed ongoing efforts to promote greater respect and understanding among Israel and her neighbors, and among Jews and Muslims.
