On June 12, tens of thousands gathered in DC for a parade down Constitution Avenue and a rally on the National Mall celebrating the Washington Capitals' first-ever Stanley Cup win — and DC’s first major professional sports title in 26 years.

The hockey franchise’s road to the Cup “put the unity in the community” during a divisive time, said team owner Ted Leonsis in his speech to the crowd on the Mall. “We all agree on one thing: We have the greatest fans in the world, and now we have the greatest hockey team in the world,” he said.
