A Special Memorial Day Service at Leisure World

To commemorate Memorial Day, the Foundation of Leisure World sponsored a ceremony on the morning of Monday, May 28, to honor the veterans who served in the United States military. As the only veterans’ organization in Leisure World, the Jewish War Veterans (JWV) Post 567 was asked by organizer Billy Saunders to provide the personnel and help plan the event. As acting commander of the Post, I arranged for the participants. Marian Altman, president of the Foundation, gave the 100 attendees a welcoming message.

Flag bearers and JWV members Jerry Cohen and Edwin Cohen opened the ceremony. The wreath was placed by veterans Dorothy Chanil and Steve O’Leary. Incoming Chaplain Phil Wendkos recited the prayer for the U.S. and Kaddish (prayer for the deceased), and Father Jim Boccabella from Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church a prayer for departed veterans. The program concluded with the singing of “G-d Bless America” and a rendition “Taps” on the JWV bugle by veteran Marlin Jenkins.

Fred Shapiro is currently the president of the Leisure World Center for Lifelong Learning and adjutant for the Jewish War Veterans Post 567. He served as religious chair and president of the Jewish Residents of Leisure World and recently completed service on the board of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC).
